City Police targets motorist with unpaid fines

Sixty-three people were arrested by the City Police over the past weekend due to unpaid fines for various traffic offences.
These people are among 60 000 motorists issued with warrants of arrest.
A media statement issued by City Police Spokesperson, Edmund Khoaseb on Thursday said a foreign national is among the arrested persons.
Khoaseb said he was randomly pulled off the road during the operation and was apprehended for not being in possession of a permit to transport passengers.
“Execution of warrants of arrest are not optional because it is an instruction from the court, which aims to inculcate behavior change and voluntary compliance with the law,” he explained.
Khoaseb indicated that the operation will involve going to corporate organisations and various Government entities to execute warrants of arrest issued by the court, in a bid to encourage motorists to clear their outstanding fines.
The operation is an ongoing process, whereby the City Police will also visit residences and will set up mobile road blocks for this purpose.
