The Executive Director (ED) in the Labour Ministry today announced that the ministry, employers and workers' representatives, at a meeting yesterday, reached consensus that employees should not lose jobs because of the State of Emergency declared to curb the spread of COVID-19.
The ED also said forced unpaid leave is illegal and unacceptable. He said the type of leave taken should be mutually agreed.
Bro-Matthew Shinguadja said the sector has learnt, with concern that some employers are opting for retrenchment, while others are forcing their employees to resign or take unpaid leave.
He, therefore, urges employers "to explore better ways that will enable them to keep their employees during this trying time".
Employers are also urged to ensure that all employees are fully remunerated for March and April.
