Rape incidents come to light at Rundu hostel

Shocking incidents of rape came to light at a school hostel that houses visually and hearing impaired learners.
Details about the incidents remain sketchy as police investigations are underway.
In one incident, a nine-year-old boy was allegedly raped by two other minors, aged 10 and 12.
Due to their age and disabilities, the two accused boys were released into the care of a social worker.
At the same school, in another rape incident, also during last week, a 13-year-old boy was raped by a 27-year-old learner who also resides in the hostel.
With both incidents occurring at the hostels of the same school, one parent questioned the supervision of children at the school, saying the children are already vulnerable as a result of their disabilities.
An acting principal at the school declined to comment on the matter, saying she was on her way to a meeting about the incidents, while the Director of Education in the Kavango East Region, Fanuel Kapapero said he was not informed of the incident.
Education Permanent Secretary, Sanet Steenkamp said she is not informed about the matter but that in such an incident, the ministry immediately dispatches an investigation team to the region.
“We have to establish the facts. However, the children’s safety and their wellbeing in terms of medical assistance and psychological support at this stage are of paramount importance to the ministry,” Steenkamp said.
