Truck drivers will soon no longer be held responsible for the overloading of the trucks they are driving.
This comes after the amendment of the Vehicle Load Mass Bill that will see truck owners being held responsible for the overloading of their trucks on national roads.
Works and Transport Minister John Mutorwa briefed the National Assembly on some of the laws his ministry is amending and repealing.
The purpose of the amendment bill is to decriminalise overload offences on truck drivers who are found driving overloaded trucks.
The current law punishes truck drivers and this is unfair according to the minister.
The bill has already been approved by Cabinet and was referred to the Cabinet Committee on Legislation where it was also approved.
It is now with the Ministry of Justice where legal drafters are finalising it.
Once the legal drafters are done the bill will be referred to the National Assembly for debate.
