On Saturday night, South African National team Bafana Bafana beat hosts Egypt by one goal to nil to proceed to the last Eight of the African Cup of Nations, while the Nigerian Super Engels beat the African Cup of Nations' previous winners Cameroon by three goals to two to reach the quarter final of the event. The South Africans who were lucky to qualify to the knock out stages of the 2019 AFCON after they depended on other results, shocked the hosts.
Thembinkosi Lorch's 85th minute goal was enough to send the 1996 Champions to the quarter final.
Egypt were the huge favourite ahead of the game after winning all their group stage games without conceding a single goal, while Bafana Banafa lost twice in the three opening games and only won against Namibia.
The South Africans put up their best performance of the tournament so far and created the better scoring opportunities during the game.
With Egypt getting desperate to win the match in the second half, South Africa benefited from their confusion and Lorch scored from a counter attack to win the match for Bafana.
They will play Nigeria in the quarter finals after the Super Eagles qualified earlier in the day by beating Cameroon
The match was a reminder of the 2000 final when Cameroon beat Nigeria on Penalties to be crowned as the African champions that year. Remembering that disappointment, the Nigerians hit the ground running from the first minute.
Their good display was rewarded with a goal through Odion Ighalo in the 19th minute of the game.
The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon turned the game on its head in the first half when Stephane Bohoken scored from close range before Clinton Njie coolly finished three minutes later to give the defending champions a narrow lead at the break.
The three-time Champions Super Eagles did however not give up and they came back with two quick goals of their own.
The first was from Ighalo again who in the process got his brace and the third of the competition and the second from Arsenal midfielder Alex Iwobi who benefited from Ighalo's ball.
Nigeria won the tie by three goals to two and their striker Ighalo was the man of the match.
