City Police Chief Abraham Kanime says about 2 124 cases of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) have been lodged with the Namibian Police or the City Police during January to November.
Of this number only 1 096 cases are registered he said.
“September to October, when the lockdown was lifted, we saw an increase in these cases,” said Kanime.
A total number of 215 SGBV cases were lodged during that period alone, but 93 of those cases remain unregistered.
The majority of offenders and victims are between the ages of 19 to 29.
Other most prevalent cases which fall under SGBV are, child abuse, economic abuse, murder, physical abuse and rape.
